In this English vocabulary lesson about work I show you some of the words we use to talk about this subject

Many people when they start work in the morning need to clock on. And when they finish they clock off. This is common in some factories where people are working shifts.

Shifts can be during the day or at night.

In Australia, many people start work at 9am and they knock off at 5 or 5.30pm.

If people work more hours than they are supposed to it is called overtime. In many counties if you work overtime you get paid for those extra hours.

Most jobs allow you to have a lunch break so you can eat your lunch and relax a little.

Work can be part-time or full-time.

If you are sick you can ask for sick leave. If you are pregnant you will take maternity leave.

Nowadays it is common for people to have long working hours. We have deadlines and objectives we need to meet.

If you are unlucky you might lose your job or get the sack. Or, if the company has some trouble, you might be made redundant.

My father took an early retirement when he was 62. We worked in the newspaper industry for close to 40 years.

When I was younger I used to nights. It was a night job. I was a waiter in an Italian restaurant.

I quit that job many years ago and I became an English teacher.

I like what I do and this profession does not really have long working hours.
