How to use the verb DO in English

In this English lesson you will learn how to use the verb DO in English.

DO is one of the most common verbs in English. In this lesson you will see how we use it as an auxiliary verbs and as a normal or ordinary verb. This lesson is aimed at people studying B2 level English or above and will come in really handy if you are preparing an exam.

‘Do’ as an auxiliary verb

We use ‘do’ as an auxiliary verb in questions and negatives.

Examples:

Juan doesn’t like sushi.

Does Juan like Sushi? No, he doesn’t.

I do enjoy going to the park on a Sunday afternoon. (emphatic)

You don’t like sushi, do you? (question tag)

A – ‘Tom stinks at chess. B – ‘Yes, he does.’ (agreement)

We live in a big city and so does Jenny. (addition)

A – ‘Shall I call you later?’ B – ‘Please do.’ (approval or permission)

Do as a normal verb

We can also use ‘do’ as a normal or ordinary very.

Examples:

What are you doing here do early?

What is Pete doing later today.

Jenny is in the bathroom doing her hair.

We didn’t do anything special yesterday.

How are you doing at school?

How do you do? What do you do for a living?

I only have a red pen. Will it do?

I didn’t do what you told me to do.
