Other ways to use the infinitive in English

Connective link + only (surprise or disappointment)

Have a look at these examples to see how we the infinitive in English.

• When I realised that it was 5.25pm I raced to the bank only to find that it was closed.
• I went to buy a new iPhone only to be told that they had sold out. So I had to wait two more weeks.
• Beth returned to the party to find Pete only to see him kissing another girl. She never spoke to him again.

After certain nouns – ability, demand, failure, offer, plan, etc.

Examples:

• His failure to win the contract meant he had to close his business. He has never been so disappointed.
• Your refusal to listen to what people say is your biggest weakness. Please try to change.
• The government’s plan to invest in local communities was a total failure.
