In this lesson you will learn some of the main phrases and English expressions with LAW, like break the law, flout the law and lay down the law.

The English language has many idioms and expressions that use the word “law.” These expressions don’t always talk about real legal rules — instead, they are used to describe everyday situations. Below are some common expressions with “law” and what they mean.

1. Law and Order

This expression refers to peace and safety in society. It means that laws are being followed and enforced.
Example: The government promised to restore law and order after the protests.

2. Above the Law

If someone is above the law, they act as if the rules don’t apply to them. It often suggests unfair privilege or misuse of power.
Example: The businessman behaved as if he was above the law.

3. Lay Down the Law

To lay down the law means to speak in a strict and firm way, telling others what they must do.
Example: The teacher laid down the law and told the class to be quiet.

4. Take the Law into Your Own Hands

This expression means solving a problem yourself instead of letting the police or legal system handle it. It usually suggests acting out of frustration.
Example: The neighbors took the law into their own hands and confronted the vandals.

5. The Law of the Land

This refers to the official rules or legal system in a country or area.
Example: Everyone must follow the law of the land.

These expressions are useful in everyday conversation. Understanding them can help you sound more natural when speaking English and help you understand news, movies, and discussions more easily.
