In this English lesson you will learn how we use be used to and get used to in English.

Be used to

The structure is:

be + used to + noun or -ing

Examples:

  • I am used to waking up early.
  • He is used to driving in heavy traffic.
  • She was not used to the hot weather.

These sentences mean that you are accustomed or not to a new situation.

Get used to

The structure is:

get + used to + noun or -ing

Examples:

  • I am getting used to living in Madrid although it is not easy.
  • She’s not getting used to waking up early because she likes to sleep in.

These sentences mean that you are becoming accustomed to a new situation.

We can this this structure with :

Future tenses:

I will get used to living in Madrid but it may take a while.

Past tenses:

  • He got used to the long working hours.

Used to + infinitive = past situation.

  • I used to live in London but not anymore.
  • He used to work here but he retired.
