English Expressions Earning Money earning money

In this Business English lesson you will learn some of the main words and expressions we use in English when we talk about Earning Money.

Let’s be honest. We all want to earn money. That is why we work, right?

Some people make a lot of money. Some people don’t make much at all.

I think that earning money is important to take care of you basic needs but we shouldn’t be too greedy.

A lot of people will tell you that the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.

I don’t have a problem with people getting rich if they work hard or have a great idea.

But we must also remember to take care of those that are not as fortunate, or people that don’t have any opportunities to find a job or feed their family.

Anyway, some of the words and expressions you will learn in the video lesson are:

Income – My annual income is $50000US.

Salary – My salary has not increased in over 5 years due to the economic crisis.

Wage – Many restaurant workers receive their wages every fortnight.

Earnings – The company’s earnings for last quarter were down 10%.

Livelihood – If you take away a person’s livelihood you will destroy them.

Take-home pay – My take-home pay is barely enough to pay my monthly expenses.

Base salary – My base salary is not great  but I usually get a good bonus.

Overtime – Many companies are reluctant to pay overtime to workers.

Sick pay – Sick pay is a benefit that many companies give to their workers.

Severance pay – If you lose your job you will most likely be given severance pay.

To make an honest living – All most people want to be able to do is make an honest living.

Make a killing – The local supermarket makes a killing on its home-brand products.

To make or lose money hand over fist – The business has been losing money hand over fist for the last year.

Bring home the bacon – My father was the one who brought home the bacon on my family.

Feel the pinch – Many people are starting to feel the pinch due to the recession.

Scrape a living – He’s not rich but he manages to scrape a decent living together.

So there we go. I hope you enjoy the lesson.
