Take forty winks or catch forty winks means to have a sleep or a nap. Normally for a short time.
Some examples would be:
– I am a little tired so I am just going to catch forty winks.
– ‘Where’s Dave?’ ‘He was tired so he’s just taking forty winks. He’ll be here shortly.
There is nothing I like more than to take a nap in the afternoon. I love to take forty winks in the afternoon. I like to feel fresh in the evening.
